Understanding Laser Eye Surgery/LASIK

FREEDOM FOR YOUR EYES

LASIK, short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure that aims to correct various vision problems, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The fundamental principle of LASIK is to reshape the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, to ensure that light entering the eye is accurately focused onto the retina to provide clearer and sharper vision.

How Does LASIK Work?

During a laser eye surgery procedure, a thin flap is created in the cornea. This flap is then lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. A specialised laser is used to reshape the corneal tissue. This reshaping helps to improve the way light rays are focused onto the retina. Once the reshaping is complete, the flap is carefully laid back in place to cover the area where the corneal tissue was removed effectively.

Benefits of Laser Eye Surgery/LASIK

Enhancing Your Vision, Transforming Your Life

Benefits of LASIK

Rapid Improvement in Vision

  • Most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision almost immediately after the procedure.

Minimal Discomfort

  • LASIK typically causes minimal pain during and after the procedure, with most patients only experiencing slight discomfort.

Quick Recovery

  • Recovery time is swift, with most patients resuming their normal activities within a day or two.

Long-Lasting Results

  • Experience the joy of clear vision with LASIK. The results will last once your eyes have stabilised post-surgery, and only minor adjustments are needed in the natural ageing process. Say goodbye to the inconvenience of glasses and contacts and hello to a new world of clarity and freedom.

Top LASIK Questions Answered

How do I know if I'm a candidate for LASIK?

Ideal candidates for LASIK are at least 18 years old, have stable vision for at least a year, have a prescription within certain limits, and have healthy eyes with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma. A comprehensive eye exam is necessary to determine if you’re a suitable candidate.

Is LASIK painful?

Most patients experience minimal to no pain during the LASIK procedure due to the numbing drops applied to the eyes. Some might feel a slight pressure sensation. Post-surgery, temporary discomfort or mild irritation might occur.

What are the risks associated with LASIK?

While LASIK is considered safe, as with any surgery, there are potential risks, including dry eyes, glare, halos, under-corrections, over-corrections, and infection. These complications are rare and often manageable with proper care and follow-up.

How long does the LASIK procedure take?

he actual laser treatment usually takes less than a minute per eye. However, you should expect to be at the surgical facility for around an hour to complete the pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery checks.

What can I expect during recovery?

After surgery, patients typically experience an improvement in their vision almost immediately. However, it may take a few days for their vision to stabilise. Some minor symptoms, such as light sensitivity, glare, and halos, may occur, but they typically improve within the first few weeks. Our support team will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure you have a smooth recovery.

How long do LASIK results last?

LASIK provides a long-term solution for vision errors, but changes in vision due to ageing may require additional correction.

Will I still need glasses after LASIK?

After LASIK, some patients may still require glasses for specific activities such as reading or driving at night, particularly as they age, but for the most part, glasses are no longer needed for daily activities.

What if I am not a candidate for laser eye surgery?

You may be a candidate for alternative vision correction procedures such as IPCL(Implantable Phakic Collamer Lens)

Some patients may not be suitable for laser eye surgery due to a weak or thin cornea or may have a very high script. The alternative for patients with such refractive errors, is implantation of an artificial lens similar to a contact lens.

The IPCL is implanted behind the pupil, in your eye through a 3mm micro-incision. This is a lens that does not have to be removed.

This lens can be used for patients with shortsightedness, farsightedness or high astigmatism. It can also be used for patients with Keratoconus.

IPCL is a short same-day procedure with improved vision within hours of the surgery .
